Torrent-fu 1.2.1 released, 1.3 almost done!?!?
I released version1.2.1 yesterday and then started on 1.3. Version 1.2.1 added multiple profile support and sorting, as well as a major rewrite that resulted in faster speeds searching and connecting to uTorrent. In the code rewrite, I also laid the framework to add other torrent clients, that framework enabled me to write support for Transmission in a very short period of time. I’m going to bed tonight with Transmission 98% working (adding torrents from search, all management, url interception from browser are all working already). The only thing left on it is integrating the file from browser portion (I did a first shot at it, but the last test didn’t work, and I’m tired).
Thanks for all the great feedback on 1.2.1, 1.3 is right around the corner!
v1.2 status update
Version 1.2 is coming along well, I’ve added sorting to the search results and the torrent view. If you noticed there I phrased the second “torrent view”, that’s because I just finished code modifications to add support for other web enabled torrent clients. The base has also been built for multiple “profiles”, that is multiple locations to send torrents to, for example if you have 2 computers with web enabled torrent clients you can now store each as a seperate “profile” and when you are prompted to send a torrent there is now a list of locations the file can be sent. The last few steps before Torent-fu 1.2 can be released are:
- rebuilding the preferences screen to handle multiple profiles
- adding more controllers for other web enabled clients (transmission, etc)
I originally set release to be this weekend, but I have family coming in to town for the weekend so it may be pushed back another week. I’m working as fast as I can though so we’ll see.
Thanks to everyone who left comments and feature requests, hope you will like the new stuff. I’ll post some screenshots of the new version soon. Thanks for your patience!
Version 1.1 Available
After a bit of work this week, there is a new version of Torrent-fu. The new release is mostly a UI update, most notably the “Manage Torrents” screen now has progress bars and automatically refreshes at 5 second intervals so you don’t have to keep refreshing to track progress.
The other big update was browser integration support. Torrent-fu now uses 2 methods to get files to your computer: passing the URL to uTorrent and Uploading a .torrent file to uTorrent. The noticable difference between the two is how android handles them. If Torrent-fu can, it intercepts the URL of a .torrent file when you tap a link and sends it away to uTorrent. However, a lot of the time the browser was not passing mime type information on clicks that had redirects to torrents, the browser would download the file locally, but Torrent-fu could not use it. Now it can, after download, the file should associate with Torrent-fu, so tapping on it should start Torrent-fu and prompt you to send the file.
Other than that there are new icons, a more descriptive UI, and better barcode scanning.
The target for v1.2 is 2 weeks from now.
Features planned so far are:
- Better preferences with more options such as: number of results to return from each provider and multiple uTorrent profiles.
- Sorting and better filtering in search results and torrent management views.
- More UI updates.
Please report any bugs you find in the new verison, and thanks for using Torrent-fu.
Oops, I mislabeled a prefrence dialog!
Just to let everyone know, I mislabeled one of the dialogs in the Preferences window. A user reported to me today that when you tap the uTorrent WebUI username preference item, the dialog says “uTorrent WebUI port”. Don’t worry though if you type in your username it still sets the username, not the port. I appologize to anyone who was confused by the mislabling, I have fixed the issue and it will be in the next update.
Status update
Just a quick update, i’m currently working on a UI refresh, the torrent view screen is getting progress bars, background refreshes (so the progressbars update without having to refresh), font size reduction on titles and better filtering of lists. On the functionality side I’m working on making the barcode search better, adding more search providers to the built in search (Torrent-fu already works with any site that sends mime types with the torrent directly in the browser), and possibly extending support to other torrent programs instead of just uTorrent. If anyone knows of a good Mac torrent app with a web interface, let me know. As of yet I have not seen a way to add WebUI to uTorrent in the Mac beta version. Also, if there are any features anyone wants added, post them here and I’ll try to add them in this update.
Oh, the app now has almost 2500 downloads. Thanks to everyone that downloaded!
A great release day
When I put Torrent-fu in the Android market 22 hours ago I had no idea it would reach 1425 downloads this quickly.
I want to thank everyone that tried out the app and left comments and suggestions. I put this site together in a rush to help support the app, and hopefully the Getting Started section will serve as help to those who were asking questions about WebUI setup and help on the preferences.
I’ll be working to more on this site in the next few days, and putting together a roadmap based on user suggestions for the next version of Torrent-fu.
Welcome to the official Torrent-fu website.

This site was created to offer help and information on Torrent-fu, a torrent search and uTorrent/Transmission controller for Android based phones. Torrent-fu is a free application and is currently available in the Android market. All comments on this site are sent directly to the developer. Check out the Getting Started section for help getting uTorrent and Torrent-fu up and running.
Don’t have Torrent-fu yet? It’s free. If you have “Barcode Scanner” installed on your phone, just scan the QRCode above to get it!
